Gypsies or Kardashians?

The norm is one culture may be different in another, such as the average age of a woman when she gets married in our everyday society in comparison to that of a gypsy girl. In this day and age, more women are getting married later on, at around age 28, after finishing school and establishing a career. However, this could not be said for every culture. Below are two examples of women today. The first is reality show celebrity Kourtney Kardashain. She is in her 30s, has a son and another baby on the way with long-time boyfriend Scott Disick but doesn't seem to have any plans of getting married anytime soon.

This next article is about young Gypsy females. Their average age of marriage is much different.

  1. This also brings up the fact that even though we are getting married later on in life due to more women being career oriented more women and even teens are starting to have children before they are married as well. This before use to be a big deal and if you had a child before you were married you were immediately forced to get married and if you chose not to you were an outcast in society. A great example of that was the scarlet letter. Now a days having a child at a young age is becoming more and more common.

Here is a clip of The Scarlet Letter the movie.

  2. The primary problem in the Scarlet Letter is the adultery (hence the A). I do think society has fewer sanctions for adultery now, though, so you're correct about that change.

I do think it's interesting that all of these stories focus on when women marry. Why not when men decide to marry? This shows how we presume that marriage means more to women than men -- a stereotypical assumption that demeans both men and women!

Also, there are many nomadic groups that outsiders would call "gypsy." It's important to recognize that this TV show is talking about a particular group that may or may not resemble other nomadic cultures and groups.
